Thank you, Sarah, for sending pictures of the first family tree addition since the inauguration of Habershons.com!
Joseph John Fry was born on Saturday, October 2nd, 2004. Congratulations, Kate and Pat!
So, if he is my father's brother's daughter's son, does that make me an aunt once removed?

Well...the way I understand all these strange designations is: the child of your first cousin is your cousin once removed. If Kate is your first or full cousin, her son should be your cousin once removed, once removed designating a different generation. Since you were never considered Kate's aunt, you're Kate's cousin, you can't be her child's aunt once removed. : )
I'm not trying to be confusing, but it sure is coming across that way.
Maybe I shouldn't get so rested. : )

Hi RH! : )
I think second cousins refers to what Cathy's kids (Maggie and Condi? : ) and Kate's kids are to each other. Children of first cousins are second cousins to each other. Third cousins refers to children of second cousins, and so on.
Confused? I am. Constantly. : )
The reason I know ANYTHING about ANY of this is because I often babysat my first cousin's kids and wanted to know what they were to me, technically. I did some research (before the advent of the internet, believe it or not...I seem to remember opening an encyclopedia!! : ) and found some source that explained it simply enough for this brain o' mine.
Anyway, congrats to the proud (and prolly tired) mom and dad. : )
