Welcome!

Congratulations! You have found the Habershons.com family website, started in December 2001. All Habershons and non-Habershons are welcome to wander around. Stick a pin in the Guest Map; leave a message in the Message Book; and if you're a Habershon, please let us know you were here so we can list you in our Branch Office. And if you are looking for stuff on Bikram Yoga or Mini Coopers, click on the pictures in the left-hand column.

We also encourage you to register. This takes less than a minute and will allow you to view and leave comments, chat in the chat box at left, and look at the photograph albums. And if you're logged in you'll never see this annoying message again.

Thank you for coming by!

Catherine Athearn (née Habershon)

mini first sight.jpg (375919 bytes) September 14th, 2002.
This morning I flew to Memphis and took a taxi to Roadshow Mini in Cordova.  Wendy2 (I'll call her "Wendy" for short) was waiting for me.  She had a grasshopper on her bonnet.
mini first sight2.jpg (329121 bytes) John Lloyd efficiently took care of all the paperwork and took my money.  Not sure how he talked me into the $114 floor mats, but they look very nice.  I'm sure he must be glad to get rid of me as I've been bugging him since February.
minis memphis.jpg (212166 bytes) After he'd shown me all her buttons and knobs he sent Wendy off to get her petrol tank filled.  During the wait, I took some pictures of all the other Minis.  Talk about Mini Heaven -- I'd never seen so many in one place.
mini roadshow.jpg (338276 bytes) Wendy was returned with a full tank and I set off for Houston.  I managed to stall her at the first traffic light.  Thought I was in first gear but it turned out to be third.  By the time I got my act together the light had already changed back to red, with the same ten cars waiting behind me.  Memphis people are either naturally good natured, or perhaps they noticed that I was outside the dealership in a brand new car.
Or maybe it was just the huge grin I had on my face.

Everything went fine after that.  I found the road to Little Rock and played Wendy my favourite Supertramp CD to get her used to America.

So, when the day comes to settle down,
Who's to blame if you're not around?
You took the long way home
You took the long way home...

From Supertramp we switched to Will Kimbrough, Counting Crows, The Groobees, and then Mozart's "Magic Flute."  And when I started to get tired it was Metallica for two hours solid.

This was the first time I'd taken a long road journey on my own in the U.S.  And it was a wonderful experience.  I felt so free.  I could do whatever I wanted, stop wherever I wanted, eat whatever I wanted, and I was driving a car I'd been pining for for 26 years.  As for Wendy, she was getting all the attention.  Guys, she's a bird magnet (that's chick magnet to American readers).  Every time I stopped, women of all ages would crowd around her admiringly, asking what she was and where I found her.  She also seems to attract 15-year-old boys.  The men stand back and look puzzled.

We stopped at a motel for the night in Marshall, Texas, and I fell asleep reading the Owner's Manual.  I slept for eight hours (well, if you don't count the three times I woke up and looked out of the window to make sure she was okay).  We hit the road again at 6:30.

Could we have kippers for breakfast
                       Mummy dear, Mummy dear
They got to have 'em in Texas
                       Cos everyone's a millionaire

Unfortunately I'd underestimated Wendy's power.  I just touch the accelerator and she leaps forward.  Many times during the journey I'd look at the speedometer and discover I was doing over 95 mph.  I tried to keep slowing down, but the road was empty.  The next thing I knew, a police car was behind us, flashing its lights.  "Nice car, ma'am, but you were driving too fast through Diboll," said Officer Rice.  Diboll?  I don't even remember driving through Diboll.  I pleaded with him not to give me a ticket, but no luck.  First one since 1990.  Bummer.

We're home now.  John took some pictures of us in the driveway.  He likes her; in fact, he loves her.  Although he does say she looks like a roller skate.  Hmmm...
