  Missing the Wall Street Journal
Posted by cat - 1033 Reads
We decided, with heavy hearts, not to renew our subscription to The Wall Street Journal this year. It's been landing on our doorstep every morning since 1997, when I first signed up for it. Back then it was a student subscription for $79/year. Now it's $349. Too much. We really only had time to read it properly on Fridays and Saturdays; sometimes copies would go completely unopened.

I was hoping that they'd call and ask us why we weren't renewing, and that maybe I'd be able to negotiate a better price (for the record, $150 is my best offer), but not a word. When we cancelled The Economist (for different reasons) they wouldn't leave us alone. In fact, we still get calls just as we're sitting down for supper.

Last Monday was the first day with no paper. It was painful. On Friday I decided to buy a copy from a newstand but was unable to find one. I looked in Barnes & Noble, Kroger, and a machine outside the Post Office. Same story on Saturday.

They just don't care about me.

Interesting. I wonder if WSJ circulation figures have dropped - it seems a very expensive subscription. I think the newspaper business generally is contracting as more people access the internet for news and free papers are readily available, certainly in London. I get the Sunday Times, Times (as does Paul) and Evening Standard on subscription at a greatly reduced price (ST/Times £13pm and ES £3pm), so they must be desperate to keep customers. Can you get a weekly digest in the US Catherine? We get The Week which is a very popular magazine every Friday and contains the best articles from all the UK newspapers.
