JANUARY 2003 |

![]() Yes, without a doubt, we have a Habershon of the Month. Well done William (pictured on the right on a warm May day in 2002) In Paul's words: I nominate William for January for his heroism in wading into deep water (at least 2ft and very cold) in darkness to rescue my car which I had foolishly driven into a flood at the end of the road to the Stables. The whole single track road and verge were under water and I misjudged where the tarmac was, thus coming to a halt with water flowing right to left and filling up the car to passenger seat level, wetting my bum as I phoned The Stables for assistance. I thought all the car electrics would soon fail, but my hazard lights kept flashing, the left hand ones both submerged, and the radio kept playing - it was like being in the Titanic with the orchestra. My second foolish action was to have put the mobile back on the passenger seat, so I suddenly realised that it was submerged and grabbed it. William and Richard soon appeared with the Range Rover and somehow William managed to find my front towing hook under the water. The car came out easily and almost fired
with the starter. William then got behind the wheel and Richard towed
him to bump start it successfully. Then while I was having a shower and changing into Richard's clothes, he, William and David baled the worst of the water out of the car. Later that evening I drove it back to Sherborne with all lights still working perfectly (good for Volvo). I think the only loss is the rear mounted CD changer. Back in Bedford now the whole car is being dried out at the Volvo garage, so that the electrics don't suffer from long-term corrosion. Even my mobile started working again the next morning.
And in David's words: "New Year's Day finished as a dark and stormy night in deepest Somerset and Paul Habershon was travelling to Southwood for supper with his brother Richard and family. On the final leg of his journey he took a right turn down the lane leading to The Stables. It had been raining heavily and the lane was flooded with the verge obscured by fast running water. The left hand wheels of his Volvo sank into the soft verge and very soon, the car was half submerged with water pouring through the car, above William quickly pulled the car back on to the road and fortunately the Volvo engine still worked, despite being submerged. If it hadn't been for William's swift action, the damage would have been much worse and the car could possibly have been written off. On the following day, January 2nd, William assisted us with clearing Grandpa's house and did several runs to the Charity shop and the tip. Without his assistance we would not have finished in a day." |
