2017 Christmas Quiz results

Here are the handicapped (one point per person deducted for participants exceeding 4) results of the 2017 Christmas Quiz:

1st – Emsworth Habs (4) 36
2nd – Salisbury Habs (6) 33
3rd tied – Lovington Habs (6) 32
3rd tied – Houston/Copenhagen Habs (4) 32
5th – Africa Habs (6) 31
6th – Hempstead Habs (6) 26

Our quizmaster, Paul, advises: “The questions which proved the most difficult, with only one correct out of six, were the Albanian Mount Korab, the mercury in the strip light, and, ironically, the Haber-Bosch process for ammonia.”

Congratulations, Emsworth Habs! An Amazon gift certificate is on its way to you. And bear in mind that one you has to set next year’s quiz.

And here are the answers. Paul says that if anyone has a dispute over their score he’ll be happy to review their entry form!

From Steel to Stone

.

We definitely have an entrepreneur or two in the family. Habershon Land is on its second project (the first was in Glastonbury), this time in Leigh-on-Mendip. Talk about going back to our childhood. We used to ride our bikes up the hill from Coleford, and across to Leigh-on-Mendip (past the scary quarry) where there was a very nice sweet shop. Later in life we spent quite a few evenings at The Bell. Lovely village!

I’ve just been doing some digging and found these Parish Council Minutes giving approval to the development. As long as they don’t block the view from Yew Tree Cottage with the new trees they should be good to go!

Good luck to you, Will and Jamie. We senior Habershons are so proud that you’re keeping the name going!

Christmas Quiz – 2017

Greetings, Habs! Paul submitted the Christmas Quiz on December 11th. I hope that whoever wins this year will be as prompt in 2018. I shall be setting it to upload on December 23rd. If anyone needs it sooner than that, please advise. Here are the rules:

This quiz is open to any household that contains a Habershon, a née Habershon, or a Habershons.com commenter.

One point will be awarded for each correct answer. One point will be deducted/added for each household with more than/fewer than four participants over the age of ten. For example, if there are ten participants, six points will be deducted. And if there are only two participants, two points will be added.

The team with the highest score will receive a £12 (or equivalent currency) Amazon gift certificate. If there are more than eight entries a second prize will be awarded. Correct answers and the team results will be published on the website as soon as possible after the closing date.

No looking up answers on the internet or in reference books. All answers must come straight from your heads. Submit your answers to Paul no later than 11pm GMT on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2017.

As usual, no correspondence will be entered into, and the Quizmaster’s decision is final. Only one entry per household.

We’re back!

Greetings, Habs! You may have noticed that this website disappeared for a few months. I was paying the bills, but unfortunately the code I was using was no longer valid so the whole thing stopped working. It would have taken us (meaning, John) a lot of time to figure out how to fix it (and time is not something he has these days), so we brought in the professionals, and they transferred everything to WordPress.

Thank you, Samuel at ProfProjects. You are worth your weight in gold.

Of course, you will note that there’s still a lot of work to be done. I need to upload everything that was there before. It may take a LONG time as I’m still holding down 2.5 jobs. But fear not, nothing has been lost. And at least we’ll be able to upload the Christmas Quiz, which is being prepared by Paul this year.

14th Annual Christmas Quiz Results

From David:

1st Bedford Habs – 72.7% (40/55 with 6 participants – net 38)
2nd Emsworth Habs – 50.9% (34/55 with 10 participants – net 28)
3rd = Houston Habs – 43.6% (31/55 with 11 participants – net 24)
3rd = Lovington Habs – 43.6% (29/55 with 8 participants – net 24)

I hope you all enjoyed the quiz this year. Congratulations Paul’s team for easily the highest score with the lowest number of participants. Amazon gift voucher follows and the privilege of setting the 2017 Christmas Quiz!

Quizmaster’s comments: The correct answers are at right here. Teams did well in the Natural History and particularly the Science & Medicine sections. Perhaps we should all have been doctors. All teams knew who founded the Salvation Army (Q26). I wonder why? Nobody got the right answer to Q2, the chronological order of four film actors’ deaths.

The 13th Annual Christmas Quiz Results and Answers

From Jim:

…After much delay I am finally ready to reveal the results of the 2015/6 Habs Christmas Quiz. I hope that you all enjoyed taking part. Click here for the answers and here for the coke bottle answers. I’m sure you will all be amazed to hear that not one team this year managed full marks on any of the rounds.

The closest were smart ale(x) Nick and co who despite correcting the quizmaster of Halifax Town’s current non league status were unsure of the Cartwright Rules. Even the Houston Habs though were unsure of these rules so I guess that’s not so bad after all. With a big movie producer and Empire subscriber on their team, the Catford Habs also came close in the film round and fell only because of a lack knowledge of Spencer Tracy’s career. With the UK’s Ambassador to Djibouti and African Union Representative on their team the Addis Habs should’ve cleaned up on the Africa Round but could only muster a 9/13. At least they did correctly identify the Ethiopian Coke bottle as did the Shropshire Habs of course. Well done to all of those who realised that all the answers in the ZZZZZ round did in fact start with Z.

So without further ado the results:

1) 61 – Catford Habs
2) 54 – Kent Habs
3) 53 – Addis Habs
4) 50 – Bedford Habs
5) 44 – Houston & Shropshire Habs
7) 43 – Torremolinos Habs
8) 32 – Somerset Habs

So congratulations to the Catford Habs who now have the honour of setting next year’s quiz…
